Job Summary

The prospective candidate will have the ability and determination to develop the skills necessary to become an Automation Controls Technician. The applicant will be working with an experienced team that will offer guidance and assistance for professional development. The qualified individual will be versed in PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and understand control loops, pressure, temperature, level measurements, and various other analog inputs to the PLC. The Automation Controls Technician will collaborate with our SCADA Technicians to ensure the continued safe operation of all our automated facilities. 


The work is a mixture of working both in the district office in Canonsburg, PA and at field compressor and meter stations. All facilities are located in western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and eastern Ohio. The technician is provided a company vehicle to travel between sites. The job requires the ability to perform physical work, requiring bending, lifting, and moving. The work schedule is flexible, but the typical day is 7 am – 4 pm Monday through Friday but may require over-time.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Comply with company and OSHA safety requirements
  • Configure, update, maintain, program, and troubleshoot existing PLCs and HMI applications and embedded control systems
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation such as level, pressure, temperature, and flow associated with the control system
  • Perform control system maintenance such as firmware updates and upgrades as needed
  • Maintaining control and electrical documentation
  • Maintaining site networks and switches
  • Collaborate closely with others on the design and implementation of the electrical, controls, HMI, and SCADA systems
  • Assist in making changes in software programs and functional operation of all SCADA systems

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Possession of a valid class C driver’s license
  • Have and maintain a clean driving record
  • Pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening
  • Pass periodic random drug screenings
  • Able to comprehend and communicate in the English language
  • Dexterity and coordination to be able to use a variety of hand and power tools safely
  • Competent use of a laptop, electrical testing, and calibration equipment
  • Must be well versed in various computer skills and standard programs such as MS-Office and various versions of Windows PC and Server Operating Systems
  • Ability to understand and carry out detailed verbal instructions
  • Analytical mindset
  • Must have good inter-personnel communication and report writing skills
  • Ability to work independently or in a group environment
  • Read and comprehend electrical and instrumentation drawings, schematics, equipment manuals

Education and Experience

  • GED or High School Diploma
  • Associates Degree or Technical Certificate in Industrial Systems Technology, or an equivalent type of degree preferred or related field or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience supporting PLCs, field devices experience required instead of a degree
  • Experience with PLC ladder logic; Rockwell Automation/Allen Bradley Studio5000, and FactoryTalk
  • Computer networking knowledge; understanding of routers, switches, and IP connections
  • Knowledge with communication protocols, such as OPC, and network systems associated with a SCADA infrastructure
  • Knowledge of database architectures, queries, and maintenance with such database technologies as MS-SQL
  • Installation and commissioning experience
  • SAP work management experience
  • Cyber-security awareness
