Supervisor - Cost Accounting

Job Summary (Purpose):


This position is responsible performing analyses related to inventory, cost and hedging, assisting with the month-end close process.  This position will also assist district, area, and regional personnel with their fuel inventory. 


Key Characteristics:


  • Strong GAAP accounting knowledge and understanding of controls required.
  • Must be able to analyze information and correspond effectively and timely with internal customers.
  • Senior level of experience in cost accounting, financial analysis, and financial management. 
    Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Understand the dynamics of cost of gas within each business segment and ensure the calculation of costs for both management projections and the income statement depict accurate costs based on the operational activity.
  • Ensure timely and accurate costing of all propane inventories, timeliness and accuracy of all cost uploads for both SAP and the DVM.
  • Continuously work to improve systems and procedures for timely and meaningful recording and reporting of cost results.  Recommend ideas to simplify and reduce the cost of gas.
  • Perform analysis and reporting of costs for Management to allow for transparency and sound decision-making.
  • Provide accurate, timely responses to operations and finance on COG inquiries.
  • Assist with inventory/cost analysis, reconciliations, district gain/loss variance analysis, and SOX key controls as needed.
  • Review and approve work prepared by other analysts and accountants, as needed.
  • Provide support to the Districts with reconciliation of district inventory and fuel gains and losses during month-end close.
  • Assist in the performance of hedge accounting close as needed. 
  • Provide mentoring, guidance and training in the development of self and staff.
  • Participation and support of costing system replacement, e.g. – Validate the transfer of data from legacy system to new the costing system.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Controller.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Highly responsive and motivated
  • Microsoft Office, including advanced level MS Excel skills are required.  Knowledge of SAP is a plus. 
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent in communicating financial information in both written and verbal forms
  • Ability to work in a high volume environment is essential.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple work assignments while meeting deadlines.
  • Expected to function with limited day to day supervision. 
    Education and Experience Required:
  • Four-year college degree with a major in Accounting or Finance.
  • GAAP accounting knowledge - CPA or MBA preferred
  • 5 - 7 years’ experience in accounting and reporting
