Sr Accountant

Job Summary (Purpose):

 

The Senior Derivative and Cost Accountant is responsible for assisting with the Company’s derivative accounting and the application of hedge accounting.  This includes various middle and back office operations as well as SOX & compliance activities associated with the Company’s derivative trading activities and portfolio (annual 350-400 million gallons of trading activity).  This role will also will prepare California Cap and Trade Calculations and support the Cost Accounting group with a variety of tasks including general ledger reconciliations, cost analysis and District assistance related to gain/loss variances.

 

Key Characteristics:

 

  • Must be able to analyze information and correspond effectively and timely with internal customers.
  • Must be highly responsive and motivated with heavy involvement in understanding company risk related to cost of gas.
  • Junior level of experience in cost accounting, financial analysis, and financial management.  The candidate must be able to learn quickly and take on increasing responsibilities.  Requires guidance from the Assistant Controller on priorities.  
     

Duties and Responsibilities:
 

  • Review and approve hedge documentation, assess effectiveness of hedges, maintain the company’s derivatives accounting software database, and perform hedge accounting close. 
  • Responsible that hedge accounting results to ensure close is completed on time.
  • Responsible for monthly journal entries to record derivatives activity for all worldwide locations.
  • Develop, maintain and report key metrics and month-end summary of derivatives activity and impact for use by senior management. 
  • Prepare exposure data related to balance sheet hedging.
  • Complete periodic SOX testing and documentation reviews of controls to ensure accuracy and reliability of derivative information.
  • Identify potential accounting issues and recommends mitigating strategies to Senior Management. Works with the businesses to implement risk mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare financial data for 10-Q and 10-K notes and disclosures and stay informed about new accounting developments related to derivatives. 
  • Act as subject matter expert on ASC 815 and ASC 820, and develop and maintain hedge accounting policies and procedures.
  • Support allocation of hedge performance for the current month projection (“DVM”)
  • Act as main point of contact with Company’s internal and external auditors.
  • Coordinate with the tax department to ensure proper reporting of hedge activities.
  • Build a culture of continuous improvement through the design and development of consistent procedures and best practices. Continuously challenge current practices and procedures as business needs evolve to implement improvements in policy, procedure and systems
  • Maintain methodology surrounding California Cap and Trade Calculation.
  • Along with the Assistant Controller, attend annual California Cap and Trade training to keep current with and changes/developments.
  • Assist with inventory/cost analysis, reconciliations, and district gain/loss variance analysis.
  • Other duties as assigned by Assistant Controller

 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 

  • Microsoft Office knowledge is necessary.  In particular, advanced level MS Excel skills are required.  Knowledge of SAP and PeopleSoft systems is a plus. 
  • Excellent in communicating financial information in both written and verbal forms and is able to work on many initiatives.
  • Ability to work in a high volume environment is essential.

 
Education and Experience Required:
 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.
  • 4-6 years’ experience in finance/accounting
  • Good understanding of US GAAP (ASC 815 and 820)
