The Fleet Operations Manager is responsible for vehicle and equipment management (including planning) which includes oversight and direction for all fleet repair and maintenance programs, fuel management programs, and management of systems to optimally utilize resources while minimizing costs. The Manager will focus on fleet efficiency, develop our vehicle replacement/deployment strategy, and develop plans to enhance the allocation of resources while maintaining a strong focus on operational safety and will ensure full compliance with the relevant legal entities (DOT, DMV, etc.). The Manager will manage R&M, administer external providers, and develop plans to implement outsourcing opportunities. The Manager will also be responsible for delivering industry leading administrative practices. The primary responsibility of this position is to manage the retail commercial fleet and the associated vehicle programs, with an emphasis on providing fleet solutions to support our field operations that focus on cost control, and operational efficiency.

 

Overall Fleet management includes >9000 power units and >2500 trailers/other equipment with an overall vehicle expense exceeding $200 million per year. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop programs and implement a Fleet Asset and Maintenance Management System for the acquisition, repair, maintenance and replacement of all company vehicles and equipment. Maintain all systems requirements.
  • Manages day to day repair, preventive maintenance, warranty recovery and compliance programs and publishes internal scorecard metrics.  Also, ensures all third-party vendors publish metric scorecards in conjunction with their contractual agreements.
  • Manage the company fleet fueling program in conjunction with the Finance Group; including the fleet fuel card program(s), negotiating discounts, monitoring compliance to company policy and providing necessary information to the tax department to collect entitled tax credits.
  • Develops and manages (day to day) fuel program activities.  Participates in the development and evaluation in the use of alternative fuels sources, carbon reduction output methodologies and/or fuel economy improvement best practices.
  • Develop and implement a best-in-class fleet administrative program.
  • Responsible for the performance management (including goal/objective setting), development, training, and education of Fleet direct reports.
  • Manages and participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned programs.
  • Develop and implement a fleet standardization and configuration process, in conjunction with the Fleet Vehicle Manager that includes the necessary safety standards. 
  • Manages day to day Fleet processes and the primary external vendors chosen to support those activities.
  • Participates in the development and administration of the company’s annual fleet budget.
  • Participates in the forecast of budgeted funds deemed necessary for equipment, materials, and/or supplies.
  • Monitors and approves monetary expenditures of approved and budgeted funds.
  • Participates in the development of the AmeriGas Fleet replacement program.
  • Reviews monthly cost accounting reports to determine effectiveness and efficiency of operations.
  • Assures that the Fleet operations are in compliance with all County, State and Federal regulations, as well as internally published safety policies and procedures.
  • Project manager for initiatives on service (ex. Garage management program).
  • Develop and manage fleet written SOP’s.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

  • Experience of managing fleet operations. 
  • Proven track record of partnership relationship development and significant cost reduction and efficiency improvement results. 
  • Extensive knowledge of supply chain management practices.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of fleet sizing, replacement cycle methodologies, equipment repair and maintenance programs and procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety principles and practices.
  • Eight to ten years of progressively responsible supervisory experience in fleet management.
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations including current drivers’ hours of service and those related to fleet administration and operations. 

Education and Experience

  • College Graduate BS in Logistics, Industrial Engineering, or related program. 
  • Experience in lieu of a BS will be considered. 
  • Advanced degree a plus.
