Job Summary:

The Area Sales Manager supports the Area Director and is responsible for all sales, marketing and customer growth in assigned Areas.    Analyzes the competitive environment and new business opportunities for each Area to develop and promote profitable customer growth and customer retention strategies. Has direct management responsibility for Account Managers and Senior Account Managers. Has dotted line management responsibility for DMs and district employees as it relates to growth.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Sales Team Results Responsible for the leadership and development of all Account Managers within their Area(s).  This includes hiring, training, coaching, setting sales targets, evaluating performance, and terminations.   Evaluates sales skills of each AM and coaches for maximum effectiveness.
  • Customer Growth Direct responsibility for the development and execution of customer growth and retention strategies for assigned Areas.  Develops and monitors territory sales and marketing plans for assigned Areas. Designs and executes district level sales plans, sets targets and communicates expectations.
  • Marketing Responsible for developing, promoting, implementing and monitoring local marketing programs within their Areas.  Responsible for promoting, implementing and monitoring regional and national sales and marketing programs.   Serves as a resource for DM with third party vendors and/or corporate marketing on creative development for local advertising and promotion.
  • Pricing Monitors district pricing strategies and provides recommendations to AM/AD/DM to maximize income and customer growth based on competitive environment in an Area.
  • Communications Utilizes Sales Activity and Sales Performance reports to communicate results and actions required with DMs and ADs. Ensures Regional Sales & Marketing Director and AD is informed of significant matters and takes corrective action or recommends alternative courses of action, as appropriate.  Ensures open communication between all district and Area employees by conducting site visits, hosting sales meetings including field employees to improve understanding of the sales and retention process.  
  • Customer Relations Collaborates with the AD in creating a strategy to assist district managers in building and maintaining relationships with high value customers.
  • Customer Service Keeps current on customer service metrics for assigned area and supports the AD/DM in developing and maintaining a customer service culture dedicated to delighting the customer.
  • Business/Market Knowledge Understands operations and keeps current on the propane industry, customer demographics and the competitive environment in their assigned Area(s) in order to drive marketplace opportunities, mitigate risks and maximize total profit.
  • Business Partner Monitors district’s ability to execute growth plan and service new customers.  Provides decisional support to the AD/DM on staffing to budget, staff selection, budgeting, focus on growth, appropriate inventory levels and other operational issues impacting growth. 
  • Documentation Ensures complete and accurate documentation for commissions or sales activity and performance reporting.  Audits commission statements and manual submissions for accuracy and takes required action.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Position requires demonstrated sales, analytical, communication, and coaching skills.
  • Must have good organizational skills with the ability to manage the sales process and maintain CRM database.

Education and Experience Required:


  • Degree in Business or equivalent experience required.
  • 5+ years marketing and sales management experience in commercial and/or residential sales. 
  • Familiarity with propane distribution industry (or similar industry), distribution operations, sales operations, marketing, business analysis and financial profit and loss experience strongly desired.
  • Individual must have successful sales and marketing track record.

Supervision of Others:


  • Shared responsibility for coaching DMs and other district employees on growth activities.
  • Direct responsibility for Sales Team.
