Job Summary (Purpose):

  • Provide strategic leadership and coordination of company accounting and financial functions
  • Ensure accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Direct the accounting function from both internal and external reporting perspectives.  Interface with Legal, Internal Audit, Investor Relations and  External Auditors
  • Partner with Business Unit leadership and Executive leadership to interpret financial results and reporting, and influence business decisions for improved results
  • Partner with Business Unit leadership to ensure the successful deployment and utilization of technology
  • Establish and maintain adequate internal control over financial reporting
  • Institute a matrixed approach for the Accounting function across four Business Units (including regulated and un-regulated entities, as well as an International business unit) and the Corporate Holding Company. Create and execute an enterprise-wide Leveraged Services strategy

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Controller’s departments
  • Design, establish and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the department’s goals and objectives
  • Ensure proper controls and processes are in place to be compliant with GAAP, COSO Internal Control Framework, SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act of July 2002) and other public company requirements. The control environment includes more than 900 key SOX controls consisting of 2,500 distinct tests. Provide recommendations for procedural improvements
  • Align business practices with internal controls to safeguard company assets and strengthen compliance with company policy. Focus financial oversight priorities on compliance and company policy, fraud detection and accurate financial reporting.
  • Ensure that financial controls are considered in all technology implementations and leverage systems to implement new processes to automate as much of the accounting function as possible.
  • Report financial information timely and accurately
    1. Enforce the timely closing of the books to meet UGI financial reporting deadlines.
    2. Manage the process of external reporting to meet compliance requirements.
  • Monitor and analyze monthly operating results against budget and prior year
  • Ensure the timely and accurate analyses and reconciliations of balance sheet accounts
  • Spearhead support to and cooperation/coordination with Internal Audit and the external auditors
  • Provide insights to leadership about operating trends, including overall financial results, reserve analysis and exceptions noted in the record to report, order to cash and procure to pay cycles.
  • Prepare accounting presentations and updates for the Audit Committee
  • Maintain SEC reporting standards for Quarterly Reports on form 10-Q and Annual reports on form 10-K, including maintaining all disclosures in accordance with GAAP. External reporting requirements include those of four distinct business units (one of which is regulated) and results in 25 sets of financial statements issued and subject to review/audit procedures.   Provide comments on drafts of press releases and the Annual Report.
  • Prepare and administer the Controller’s departments annual budget and forecasts thereof
  • Establish goals and execute plans for the department’s continuous improvement initiatives to drive capability, efficacy and efficiency
  • Serve on planning, risk and policy-making committees
  • Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate a professional accounting  staff
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including general accepted accounting principles and SEC reporting requirements.  Familiarity with automated financial and accounting reporting systems.  Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections.
  • Effective partnership capabilities to support commercial strategy execution and improve financial results.
  • Position requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, plus the ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects.  Drive to participate in and facilitate group meetings to achieve a collaborative result is required.
  • Ability to independently visualize and format financial/statistical data in a manner which conveys a large amount of information for decision making purposes with limited further analysis or interpretation.
  • Position requires a willingness to work a flexible schedule.

 

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Finance or Accounting; CPA,CMA, and/or MBA required
  • 10+ years public accounting or finance experience with a minimum of 5 years as a manager
