Job Summary (Purpose):

The Safety Manager is responsible for all SLAW Safety which comprises both the core employee safety training and the maintaining a safe operational environment that works towards world class safety results. The manager provides leadership beginning with safety strategy through to effective communications that provide safety results via safety audits. Travels and maintains ongoing employee safety visits and field training. They build administrative (compliance) functions and critical programs that drive cultural/behavioral change and improvements.


  • Computer databases, regulatory compliance of FMCSA and OSHA
  • Supply Logistics and Wholesale (SLAW) annual Safety Plan
  • Accident/Incident reporting and DOT driver compliance
  • Reports findings of SLAW training performance and communicates

Duties and Responsibilities:


Training – Responsible for all safety training; manages the training programs, the PTI driver handbook for SLAW and serves as the primary trainer for new hire driver training


Incident Reporting - Manages the AmeriGas Safety Incident Reporting, Tracking and Corrective Action Database System ensuring that all accidents/incidents are recorded timely and accurately as required by regulations and company policy. Leads the Accident Review Committee (ARC) and provides documentation and background information for incidents under review


Uses the AmeriGas Incident reporting system to analyze accident/injury data for employees, vehicles, and third-party incidents.  Identifies trends and provides analyses to the Houston Safety Leadership, Regional Logistics Managers and Area Transportation Managers. Oversees the SLAW Safety Task Force


Generates routine and special request training performance reports to management to track the Safety and/or DOT performance of all business units within SLAW


Safety Initiatives- Oversees key safety initiatives as a subject matter expert or leader; e.g. Ltyx (Drivecam), Smith Driver Training, Office Safety Committees




Supervision - Directly supervises two Houston Safety Administrative Assistants and ensures the effective, efficient safety support of SLAW Operations



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


Must have a good working knowledge of FMCSR and OSHA regulations. The individual must be able to read and interpret regulations as well as company policies and procedures


The individual must possess strong leadership coaching, development, and writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively to large groups


Information Technology – Requires a management level of experience as a user of advanced IT systems and products.  Must have thorough knowledge of software products and Microsoft technologies including report services, data base analysis, query and reporting tools


Effective self-management skills (e.g. initiative, decision-making, time management, work planning and organization)


Education and Experience Required:


Bachelor of Science degree in safety or a related discipline


10+ years of progressive work experience of administering safety, occupational health, or environmental computer database systems


5+ years Leadership in a management or supervisory position required


Valid Class A driver’s license with endorsements required


Working conditions:


The employee will be working in both office and external work environments with up to 30% travel. They are based in the Houston corporate office with travel to operational sites around the country.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is sometimes exposed to outside weather conditions and areas where hazardous and/or flammable chemicals are handled. The employee may sometimes be exposed to moving mechanical parts, vibration, and/or high noise levels.
