Position Summary: 


The Benefits Specialist – Life & Disability is responsible for the day-to-day administration of life and disability benefits, including waiver of premium processing, death claims, leave-related billing, and compliance activities.  This role ensures accurate recordkeeping, supports retirees life and employees on leave, and responds to legal and regulatory requests related to employee benefits.

 

Essential Functions:  


Life Insurance Administration


•    Manage and maintain retiree life insurance records, ensuring all eligible individuals are accurately loaded
•    Process life insurance death claims for active and retired employees, including coordination with carriers and communication with beneficiaries 
•    Prepare and track waiver of premium applications for employees on long term disability
•    Process and monitor life insurance porting and conversion requests, ensuring deadlines and carrier requirements are met


Disability Benefit Coordination


•    Coordinate with disability carriers (STD and LTD) to ensure claim status updates are received and documented
•    Support employees through LTD Transition process, including carrier liaison and required documentation


Billing for Leave of Absence


•    Manage and process benefit billing for employees on unpaid leave including workers’ compensation, disability, and FMLA
•    Coordinate with payroll and third-party vendors to ensure accurate billing and premium collections
•    Monitor and resolve discrepancies in benefit coverage and payments during leave periods


Compliance and Legal Requests


•    Respond to state HIPP (Health Insurance Premium Payment) reporting requirements, ensuring timely and accurate submissions
•    Coordinate and fulfill benefits-related subpoena requests, including data extraction and document preparation
•    Maintain documentation and audit trails to support legal and regulatory compliance


Data Analysis & Reporting


•    Analyze life and disability claims data to identify trends, cost drivers, claims durations, and potential risk areas
•    Develop regular and ad hoc reports to support program evaluation, vendor performance, and case resolution timelines
•    Create dashboards or summary visuals that provide visibility to leave durations, waiver of premium volumes, and claim conversion rates
•    Use historical data to forecast life and disability claim volumes, durations, and financial impacts
•    Track and evaluate the impact of unpaid leave billing on benefit continuation and employee return-to-work outcomes
•    Maintain KPIs for waiver of premium volume, life conversion activity, LTD claim aging, and compliance fulfillment timelines

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  


•    Works independently 
•    Excellent customer service and communication skills
•    Proficient with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel
•    Flexible and able to handle multiple priorities
•    Excellent attitude and interpersonal skills


Education: 

•    Bachelor’s degree in human resources or equivalent work experience
•    5 years experience
