Job Summary

The Human Resources Generalist reports to the Human Resources Director and is responsible for collaborating with local management to support the operation of their business function through proper application of human resource practices and policies.   Responsibilities include working with local management in the areas of; labor and employee relations, recruitment, interpretation of and guidance in administering Company policies, compensation, benefits, coaching and counseling and other duties as necessary to ensure maximum effectiveness of the business function. 

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Consults with and counsels area management team regarding employee and labor relations matters such as disciplinary actions, interpretation of collective bargaining agreement, grievance or complaint investigation and response, performance management and improvement, etc. and reviews documentation provided by the manager/supervisor and in cases where directly involved, prepares corresponding documentation.  Demonstrates an appropriate balance between Company and employee advocacy in all matters. Communicates with management and employees as required in resolving conflicts.  Assists management team during collective bargaining process.  
  • Works with hiring managers and Talent Acquisition Team members to interview and select internal and external candidates for job openings.  Is an active participant in the recruitment outreach efforts to generate diverse applicant flow in accordance with the Company’s affirmative action plan.  Represents the company at recruiting events (tech schools, community colleges, universities, etc.) to build a talent pipeline as well as relationships with key institutions. Conducts exit interviews with employees leaving the company to assess overall success of the employment relationship and opportunities for improvement.
  • Assists in the development of Company and Human Resources policies and practices.  Provides guidance related to the interpretation and application of policies and procedures.  Assures a practical level of consistency and fairness in their application. Member of task force to ensure policies remain up-to-date and that policy updates are communicated to all employees at the time they are updated.  Participates in HR projects or business projects as needed.
  • Understands how the Company’s compensation system operates and consults with internal customers about salary planning, internal equity and any pay rate changes to ensure the Company is as consistent as possible with its pay practices.  Ensures the business operates within Company guidelines for compensation changes that include and may not be limited to merit increases, promotions, transfers, demotions and terminations. Assists employees with questions regarding benefits plans.
  • Supports all safety related initiatives. Coordinates workers’ compensation claims.  Actively promotes the use of light/restricted duty for employees on workers’ compensation or otherwise in conjunction with approved medical restrictions to contain costs. Advocates and promotes wellness initiatives.  
     
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • In depth knowledge of employee and labor relations policies, practices, procedures and laws including:  FLSA, FMLA, ADA, ADEA, EEO/AAP, Title VII, NLRA, collective bargaining practices, compensation practices, wage and hour laws, recruiting, interviewing, etc.  
  • Writing skills – able to communicate effectively in written form to write grievance responses, document disciplinary action and assist with written performance improvement plans.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or Business Administration with an emphasis on Human Resources or related field.
  • Minimum three years in a human resources generalist role
  • PHR would be beneficial but not required
