Job Summary

Under general supervision provide engineering support and perform system planning to ensure the electric distribution and transmission system has the necessary facilities and capacity to provide reliable electric service to existing and future customers.  Provide engineering support in relation to distribution device protection, coordination studies and short circuit fault analysis.  Assist with the NERC Compliance Program relative to the NERC Reliability Standards and manage the TO/TOP Matrix.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the distribution and transmission engineering analysis (EA) model.  Perform seasonal short and long-term planning studies to identify system deficiencies and the impact of planned and emergency switching.  Based on the results of these studies develop specific system planning recommendations which will need to be identified in future budget years.  Review and update distribution and transmission switching manual.
  • Assist with NERC/RFC/PJM TO compliance efforts.  Monitor applicable Reliability Standards and their impact on the Electric Division and assist with the updating of compliance plans to address new or revised requirements.
  • Utilize the short circuit model as well as other engineering techniques to develop protective device recommendations for the distribution engineering group in support of new business installations.  Perform device coordination studies to identify and correct fuse sizes or device settings that could lead to mis-operations resulting in reduced system reliability.
  • Assist with the planning & placement of Distribution Automation Devices, create test plans & setting for OCR & provide engineering support with respect to the set-up and installation of voltage regulators.
  • Provide operational support to the System Operations Department by reviewing all transmission related switching requests.  Review and maintain the transmission switching manual.  Represent UGI Electric Division on the PJM Planning, TO/TOP Matrix, SRTEP committees and working groups.
  • Responsible for the UGI Small Generator Interconnection process.  Acts as initial customer contact for all DG requests providing interconnection information, technical requirements and agreements.  Performs system analysis on all proposed DG interconnection projects evaluating impacts on system reliability and performance. Perform special projects as assigned.  Assist in restoring service to customers after storms and other system trouble.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A technical background and/or working knowledge of electrical transmission/distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of UGI’s Planning Principles and Practices.
  • Knowledge of device coordination and short circuit studies.
  • Proficiency in Access, Word, Excel, PSEE & Cyme.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills; ability to learn new applications and processes; the ability to apply this knowledge to perform planning functions and provide recommendations.
  • Ability to organize information and data to support and justify recommendations; ability to apply creative programming solutions to achieve the desired results.
  • Knowledge of or familiar with NERC Regulations.

Education and Experience

  • B.S. Electrical Engineering
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience
  • Valid PA Driver’s License
