To complete assigned engineering work, primarily involving the existing distribution system and its facilities in situation affected by physical conditions, pressure, and/or roadway construction activity, so as to research and design potential additions and modifications to the distribution system utilizing budgeted and allocated resources in an effective, efficient and professional manner, and in compliance with applicable codes and company policies and goals.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Review roadway construction plans from the State, municipalities, contractors and/or developers for conflicts and/or needed system maintenance to be done in coordination with proposed construction activity.
  • Research internal records & assess system conditions via MapFrame, Optimain, network analysis, etc. for planning system facility replacements due to condition or pressure needs, or to assess involvement with proposed Sate or Municipal roadway improvement plans.
  • Communicate and internally coordinate workload priorities, C&M installation concerns, project manpower requirements, material procurement, permit application, etc. regarding the design and implementation of projects.
  • Without supervision/direction, design and estimate cost for all non-complex and come complex distribution system additions and modifications including utilizing DOJM and other work order system, combined with the Annual Pipeline Contract, to cost-effectively specify design parameters and to select contractors, and/or create bid packages.
  • Monitor projects for actual installation (and cost containment) versus design including field coordination during construction, assessment or project costs using Oracle, creation of change orders, post-construction debriefing with C&M.  As necessary, preparation of job completion packages for Central Maps & Records and Accounting Department, completed job orders, etc.
  • Represent the Company at contraction and/or utility meetings with the State, municipalities, contractors, developers, etc.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A general knowledge of the properties of natural gas as they relate to pressure and flow, and of the principles which apply to gas facility construction and maintenance.
  • General knowledge of applicable Federal (DOT), State (PUC) and local codes, the Company Mainframe computer systems, such as CICS, Design manager, DOJM, Oracle and MapFrame, and Company policy and procedures, such as those found int eh Gas Operations Manual (GOM).
  • Familiarity with office workflow procedures and have an understanding of available resources such as maps and records, maintenance reports, time sheets and contractor bills.
  • Using vision and creative thinking to determine the best short term and long term manner to implement system improvements.
  • Having the ability (through knowledge) to implement a system modification to keep it in operations (usually on a temporary basis) due to lack of proper materials and/or obsolescence of the gas facility./  For example, the details (exact material and size) of underground facilities are often unknown and temporary repairs are made to maintain service until special fittings can be procured.



  • Engineering Degree
  • 0 – 2 Years of experience


Working Conditions:

  • Although the majority of the time is spent in a regular office environment, can be expected to complete assigned duties in extremely hot or cold temperatures as well as on roadways where heavy traffic conditions exist.
