Electric Engineering Intern

Individual will primarily assist the Electric Division Distribution Planner with the development of the engineering planning model which is utilized to run both load flow and short circuit analysis. Additional work will include facility field verifications and line phasing, enhancements to the ESRI GIS system, and assistance with development of computer-based training programs.


Principal Accountabilities:

  • The primary project for the inter/co-op will be the enhancement of the Electric Division’s engineering analysis tool call Cyme. The individual will work with the Sr. Engineer responsible for distribution planning to further develop the distribution planning model (Cyme) to correctly model facilities, load and phasing. They will perform studies and gather field data to verify model results with actual data. They will build UGI substations within the CYME substation module (new application within Cyme) using drawings or substation visits and input all device ratings into the equipment database. This includes transformer, breaker, bus, and disconnect ampacity ratings. The 2019 goal is to complete 10 of 44 feeders and all 12 distribution substations.
  • Review Electric T&D manual for OH construction and compare to the CYME database. Any matching construction should have specs verified such as distances between conductors and all other should be reviewed to be either kept or removed. Currently the CYME DB has over 30 types of construction and a poor naming convention.
  • Work with purchasing to verify the types of UG cable UGI has bought and has in stock. Currently the CYME DB has over 100 types of UG cable which should be reviewed to what we have used in the past and what we currently use, and resistance, reactance, and conductance values should be entered from the manufacturer spec sheets.
  • Add distributed generation (solar) customers into the GIS so they can be imported into CYME which will give a more accurate short circuit level. Conduct field verification for mapping discrepancies and update GIS. Phase verification using the phase ID tool at locations in the UGI service territory.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Base Electrical Engineering Curriculum
  • Advanced computer skills (ability to understand databases, computer programming capabilities)
  • Good communication and writing skills
  • GIS skills are a plus



  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering


Working Conditions:
