Job Summary

The Director, Community Relations Programs, leads a team of three Community Relations Managers and one Community Relations Program Coordinator in designing, developing and implementing programs across the UGI Utilities service territory that build relationships with community residents and community-based organizations; provides donations and sponsorships to key organizations providing education improvement, social service and emergency response and recovery services; and enable UGI employee volunteer engagement aimed at making communities within the service territory better today and stronger tomorrow.  Imbedded in all programs is to create relationships that increase awareness and understanding of UGI, its business activities, its commitment to safe and reliable delivery of energy, and its culture of environmental and community stewardship.  The Director also supervises the Manager Media Relations and Special Projects in activities related to external communications supporting the Company’s capital replacement and betterment program, emergency response, PUC compliance communications and external brand and image efforts.  

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train and lead a team of three Community Relations Managers, one Program Coordinator, and Manager, Media Relations and Special Projects.  Guide the preparation of annual Community Relations program and External Communication salary and donations budgets; ensure all Department administrative activities are conducted accurately and on deadline.  
  • Provide support to Operations and Engineering Departments on capital budget projects by coordinating community support initiatives such as: media relations and external communication activities; community town hall meetings; one-on-one meetings with concerned community members; interaction with municipal leaders; direct mail communications and other interactive programs to address questions and resolve issues arising from UGI projects.    
  • Lead and manage annual community relations donations and sponsorship program in conjunction with Community Relations Managers, especially the Company’s EITC, OSTC and Pre-K tax credit donation programs.  Identify recipient organizations; evaluate programs to sponsor; review reports and metrics on programs receiving UGI support; and ensure tax credit donations are properly documented to ensure maximum benefit to UGI, our customers, and the many communities we serve. 
  • Lead and support UGI employee volunteer initiatives across the UGI service territory, with support from the three Community Relations Managers and the Program Coordinator, to create and sustain Company-wide employee engagement initiatives (RIF, United Way Campaign, Red Cross “Sound the Alarm”).
  • Represent UGI Utilities on significant community organization Boards; support / represent UGI President and members of the senior executive team via effective service as a member of boards of directors of community-based organizations supporting communities within the UGI service area. 
  • Provide crisis response and recovery support to UGI, its customers, communities and employees during natural or man-made disaster incidents; serve as PIO/Community Liaison officer as part the UGI ICS (incident command system); coordinate outreach and engagement of community-based organizations who deploy emergency response and recovery assets; support Customer Outreach, Operations and Engineering Departments on incident response by coordinating point-of-contact for community members, leaders and others requesting information and responses to questions and issues of concern.
  • Establish communications procedures, messaging, methods and internal resources, including personnel, to respond to emergency situations for the Company.  Develop the Company’s ability to respond to crisis and its flexibility to adapt to fast-changing situations.  Serve as back-up media spokesperson as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent presentation skills, both verbal and written, including the ability to communicate complex concepts effectively and succinctly.
  • Understands and is comfortable with natural gas utility operations / capable of explaining company functions and operations to outside audiences.
  • Ability to build relationships with leaders from community, business, non-profit organizations, as well as elected and appointed leaders, within communities served by UGI Utilities.
  • Able to develop draft plans and budgets, and to organize programs and projects involving both internal and external resources.
  • Comfortable in participating in cross-functional teams developing strategies, tactics and integrated plans.
  • Experience designing, developing and leading charitable giving, volunteerism, community relations and/or corporate social responsibility programs.
  • Ability to identify changing community priorities; adapt and align staff and departmental resources to address them; adapt plans, budgets and staffing to align to accomplish UGI goals and objectives focused on the safe and reliable delivery of energy to our customers and to the many communities served by the Company.  
  • Demonstrated qualities of leadership; able to coach and counsel senior Company executives on community engagement programs and activities; experienced in providing support and mentoring to employee volunteer programs.
  • Background and experience in directing media relations and external communications programs for a large organization.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Excellent ability to analyze problems and develop creative solutions.

Education and Experience

  • BA/BS degree (Communications, Marketing, Social Work); Masters a plus.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in developing and/or leading community relations or related activities in a corporate, non-profit or agency setting.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) a plus.
