Job Summary
This Engineering Intern position will support the engineering department in the administration of duties associated with the review, preparation and development of pipeline cost analysis/bid analysis, pipeline schematics, pipeline system review, and pipeline design assistance. Tasks include but are not limited to:
1. Obtain pipeline construction experience by visiting project sites and understanding company policy and procedure
2. Determine pipeline replacement sizing using hydraulic modeling software
3. Review of as-built drawings to determine project design options
4. Identification and design of all service lines and meter sets affected by replacement project
5. Development of construction drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D
6. Draft local, state and federal permits applications
7. Development of project estimates using blanket contract pricing and company software
8. Input proposed pipeline projects into GIS software
9. Review completed project folders for accuracy and completeness
10. Review and respond to Pennsylvania Design 1-Call tickets
At the completion of this internship, the intern will utilize the skills, knowledge and experience obtained during the internship to design and estimate a smaller scope (<$300K) main replacement project. The intern will have presented this project to management for DOA approval and will have successfully obtained DOA approval for the project.
**This position is fully on site 5 days a week in the Bethlehem, PA location.**
Duties and Responsibilities
- Project cost analysis / bid analysis – Review construction bids for pipeline projects, analyze bid spreads, and develop regression model to determine typical ranges of expected cost for various project types.
- Pipeline Construction Drawings – Through the use PA One Call Design Tickets and light field survey, develop AutoCAD base plans to be used in pipeline replacement design packages
- Pipeline design assistance – Assist engineers in performing pipeline projects designs.
- Pipeline system review – Review existing pipeline facilities, gather facility data from historical records and through field reconnaissance, perform pressure design calculations, identify pressure limitations, and analyze alternatives to increasing system capacity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- 2D AutoCAD or other drafting software experience
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
- Microsoft Project Experience
- Fluid dynamics principles
- General construction background
- Proficient in reading design prints/blue prints
Education and Experience
- H.S. Diploma/Currently enrolled in a Bachelors Degree program in an Engineering discipline.
