Job Summary

Lead UGI headquarters’ person responsible for the planning, coordinating, researching, summarizing and the effective documentation of technical accounting research and the implementation and application of new accounting standards. Provides technical accounting support and expertise to UGI business units for complex accounting areas including, but not limited to, business combinations, divestitures, derivative accounting, goodwill and other long-lived asset impairment evaluations. Coordinate external audit/review efforts related to technical accounting matters including the various GAAP checklists and compilation/review of the overall analytical review (“OAR”).  This person will work with UGI’s business units and other finance groups to develop and maintain a corporate-wide accounting policies manual. This position reports to the Senior Director - Technical Accounting and Financial Reporting, and shall develop working relationships with other departments within the UGI Corporate headquarters accounting group and accounting leads at each of UGI’s business units (including foreign units). 

 

This role shall also provide technical accounting expertise to UGI’s External Reporting group regarding required disclosures for new accounting standards. The role will interface with cross functional teams (including Treasury, Tax, FP&A, and Legal representatives). This position’s responsibilities also include:

o    Acting as Subject Matter Expert (SME) on complex accounting topics;

o    Researching, advising and documenting technical accounting matters (GAAP and SEC), including coordinating conclusions and research with external auditors;

o    Monitoring emerging accounting literature and preparing summaries and briefings for senior management

o    Assisting in the preparation and the presentation of educational materials to worldwide accounting and finance functions;

o    Working with domestic and international accountants to provide technical accounting support for unusual or complex transactions;

o    Overseeing and coordinating share-based compensation amounts for UGI and its consolidated subsidiaries, and creating related quarterly and annual disclosures support for share-based compensation using third-party software and the work of third-party consultants.

 


In addition to the technical accounting responsibilities outlined above, this position shall provide assistance, when required, to the External Reporting team with respect to certain elements of quarterly and annual financial statements provided to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) or other external stakeholders. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, Oversee and Participate in Accounting Research and Business Unit Accounting Support. Perform research through the use of research tools provided by third-party vendors. Communicate the potential impacts to business unit and corporate senior management, and also external auditors. Plan and coordinate the provision of technical accounting expertise to UGI business units for complex or unusual accounting transactions. Work directly with domestic and international accountants to provide technical accounting support for unusual or complex transactions, as required.
  • Accounting Standards Adoption Support. Oversee the evaluation of new accounting standards including researching and evaluating the impact on UGI and its business units. Work collaboratively with business units on possible accounting impacts. Manage complex technical accounting “special projects.”
  • Share-Based Compensation Accounting and Reporting. Oversee and coordinate the calculation of share-based compensation amounts for UGI and its consolidated subsidiaries; oversee quarterly and annual disclosures support for share-based compensation using third-party software and the work of third-party consultants.
  • Technical Accounting Education and Development. Oversee, plan and participate in the development of educational materials and its presentation to communicate changes in accounting to all business units.
  • Corporate Accounting Policies Development Support. Develop and maintain a Corporate-wide accounting policies manual.
  • Support External Reporting Function. Provide assistance, when required, to the External Reporting team, including coordination/review of quarterly financial statement flux analyses, with respect to certain elements in the quarterly and annual financial statements provided to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) or other external stakeholders. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current SEC reporting rules and regulations and U.S. GAAP accounting rules
  • Ability to influence people and obtain cooperation for accounting research and implementation projects
  • Knowledge of SEC reporting rules and regulations and GAAP accounting rules  
  • Knowledge and practical use of spreadsheet software packages, primarily EXCEL and Word
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to perform research on accounting and finance issues
  • Ability to organize and drive projects to completion
  • Ability to work in a less structured role
  • Ability to clearly document the Company’s position on current/pending accounting guidance, transaction driven events, external reporting matters
  • Capable of summarizing issues for senior management and/or peers who do not have an understanding of technical accounting rules and regulations.  
  • Ability to apply good judgment with respect to application of accounting rules and regulations to the Company's financial reporting
  • Extremely detail oriented and organized

Education and Experience

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting; certification as a public accountant (CPA)
  • Minimum 8 years accounting experience; Big 4 experience preferred
