Senior Manager - Cost Accounting

Responsible for maintaining strong internal controls over propane inventory and the reporting of the company’s cost of gas to assist management in establishing pricing for customers.  In addition, the supervision of three departments (Cost Accounting, Fuel Payables & Houston Accounting) as wells as coordination with the Houston supply group in relation to cut-off and valuation of propane inventory transactions and compliance with hedging policies. Also works with other departments on hedging needs (National Accounts & Pricing) and for the assessment of embedded derivatives within contracts for the company. Responsible for simplification of inventory processes & procedures and implementation of IT systems and controls

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains internal control over inventory including cut-off, quantity on hand (existence) and the average cost of propane (valuation) and the index cost calculation which supports a large portion of the company’s pricing activity
  • Partners with other departments on interpretation of cost information in performing pricing & supply functions as well as assessing contracts for derivative treatment related to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Leader of accounting refinement initiatives, implementation of Teton improvements & other information technology systems
  • Leader of the simplification of inventory processes at the back office and field level including the development of technology solutions
  • Supervision of Cost Management Group in reporting of company cost of gas in the monthly close, the preparation of the index cost report used by the pricing group & general accounting and control processes
  • Supervision of the Fuel Payables department in processing disbursements for propane and maintaining proper internal controls by coordinating activities with fuel supply procurement in Houston and outside vendors
  • Maintains month, quarterly and year end controls in accordance with SOX for inventory and hedge transactions
  • Addresses IT controls related to inventory reporting and transactions
  • Provides projections on cost of gas results to senior management and operations
  • Leads field training activities within relation to inventory month end and related processes.
  • Develops staff for proper succession of responsibilities as well as performance of internal controls around costing & account reconciliations
  • Liaison to UGI and external auditors in relation to hedging of propane and inventory.
  • Represents Cost accounting on Acquisition and Divestitures.

Education and Experience Required:

 

  • Four-year college degree with a major in Accounting or Finance.
  • 5 - 8 years of experience in cost management, auditing & corporate accounting environment
  • CPA preferred
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and internal controls related to hedging and inventory
