Job Summary (Purpose):


The Account Manager – Retention is responsible for the retention of existing accounts at risk. Their main focus is retaining current AmeriGas accounts with accountability for medium and large non-residential accounts in an assigned territory. The Account Manager assists local operations management in developing stronger relationships with existing customers through direct sales calls (both joint and individually) and by coaching AmeriGas District employees on how to retain our business; both non-residential and residential.

  • Ability to establish and develop both internal and external relationships and retain current business through proactive retention calls.
  • Understands AmeriGas business and is an expert on products, business segments and retention process.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Primary job function is retention of accounts in an assigned territory.
  • Daily customer visits with B2C contact.
  • Visual inspections of equipment and noting of its condition, during customer visits. 
  • Completes service evaluation forms to document customer visits.
  • Shares results with Operations if repairs are needed, with a copy placed in the customer’s file.
  • Seeks upgrade opportunities where applicable; considering right sizing of accounts and storage needs.
  • Communication of sales opportunities with the account manager via the leads portal.
  • Establishes strong relationships with current customers through the use of proactive retention efforts and issue resolution.
  • Develop and execute a retention plan for their specific geographic area in order to maintain a high level of effective retention call activity and increase retention results.
  • Networks with decision-makers in targeted client organizations to retain them as a high value customer.
  • Makes the appropriate time commitment to build the internal and external client relationships both during normal work hours and special events.
  • Protects AmeriGas from competitive threats by conducting key account reviews and maintaining excellent competitive intelligence.
  • Reviews retention techniques and results in other key segments or areas to develop “Retention Best Practices” to be shared across district, market, region and company lines.
  • Works with Market Sales Manager and vendors to improve ability to use sales and retention tools and techniques to improve retention results.
  • Attends periodic meetings and training classes as required.
  • Prepares complete and accurate paperwork (i.e., retention efforts, sales orders, activity reports, etc.) based on corporate policy and procedures
  • Must comply with all company policies.
  • Other duties as needed and determined by sales manager to support sales and retention efforts.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Must have all sales skills necessary to retain customers as well as have a good working knowledge of the sales and acquisition process of new customers.
  • Must have complete understanding of propane products and services.
  • Must be able to maintain a high level of productivity through careful planning and execution.
  • An “expert” on products and solutions and is current on regulatory changes.
  • Must thrive working in a high paced, high energy environment working from multiples locations outside of an office.
  • Maintains working knowledge of applications and customer solutions including Microsoft Office Suite as well as Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems.


Education and Experience Required:


  • High school education required, college degree preferred. 
  • Requires a minimum of 3 years experience in commercial & industrial sales.
